Mauritius’s first mobile veterinary clinic was inaugurated on July 08, 2024. The acquisition was made possible by the SEGA – One Health Network of the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC). With the support of the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the European Union (EU). Without further ado, a team of veterinarians travelled to Nouvelle Découverte, to meet livestock farmers.
A look back at the first field mission
The demonstration provided an opportunity to showcase the clinic’s capabilities and gather feedback from livestock farmers. The aim of this mobile veterinary clinic is to provide local veterinary care. It also reduces the stress and risks associated with transporting animals.
During this mission, and thanks to the clinic’s modern equipment, the veterinarians were able to :
- perform two ultrasound scans
- take blood samples to confirm gestation and check for diseases
- injections of vitamins needed for good gestation
Advantages of this mobile veterinary clinic
This mobile clinic is equipped, among other things, with a modern surgical environment, a microscope and ultrasound equipment, enabling precise diagnoses and on-the-spot interventions.
A GPS system and a mobile application will subsequently facilitate the management of interventions and enable breeders to know the exact location of the clinic, thus optimizing care planning.
About the mobile veterinary clinic
Valued at 189,000 euros, this mobile veterinary clinic is further proof of the successful collaboration between IOC, AFD and the EU to improve health in the region.
In December 2023, a level 3 (P3) biosafety laboratory had already been supplied to the Mauritian health authorities, illustrating ongoing efforts to strengthen public and animal health in Mauritius.
